Skype for Windows and Mac

Skype is a popular external application used by many people around the world.  Microsoft have provisioned Lync to interact with Microsoft-associated Skype accounts, meaning we can communicate with Skype users who do not necessarily have Lync, but who have associated their Skype accounts with a Microsoft account. 

Below is a simple step-by-step guide on how Skype users can add you as a Lync user to their buddy list.

Add a Contact (Windows)

  1. Click on your e-mail account name at the top-right corner of the window, and select Switch to compact view
  2. Click on the Add a friend… icon (top-left of window, second icon from the left), then select Add a friend…
  3. Type in the NMMU Lync address of the user (i.e., granta@nmmu.ac.za) and click on Next
  4. Make the user a favorite by checking the Make this person a favorite box, or leave the box unchecked if you do not wish to make them a favorite. Click on Next
  5. Click on Close
  6. You will be able to chat with the user as soon as they accept your invitation to chat

Add a Contact (Mac)

  1. Click on the Add icon at the top-left corner of the window
  2. Type in the e-mail address of the user (i.e., granta@nmmu.ac.za) and click on Next
  3. Click Finish, or click Next to add more contacts

Remove a Contact

  1. Right-click on the contact you wish to remove from your Contact List
  2. Click on Delete contact. On Windows, click Delete when prompted

Initiate an IM

  1. Double-click on the contact you wish to IM
  2. Type your message in the text box and press Enter

Audio and Video Calls

If audio and video devices are available on both users’ computers, you may initiate a video call by clicking on Video Call at the bottom of the text box. This feature is not available on Mac.
